Football: Maribor Starting Champions League Campaign

Published on 17 september 2014

Coach Ante Šimundža, who will not be able to count on the injured veteran Marko Šuler, who usually anchors Maribor's defence, expects that his players will be at a high level tonight.

"The preparations have been running smoothly. We are focused on the European test. The players are mentally and physically prepared and relaxed, but also aware of the importance and quality of the competition," said Šimundža, who scored the first goals for Maribor in the Champions League 15 years ago.

Maribor captain Marcos Tavares is aware that the match will be tough but is counting on support from the sold-out Ljudski vrt stadium. "Playing in the Champions League is a great privilege both for the payers and the club. This is what all of us had waited and wished for."

Maribor's first opponent in Europe's elite football competition is the third most successful Portuguese football club with 18 national league titles. Currently its most dangerous player is winger Nani, who is on loan from Manchester United.

As part of group stage of the Champions League, Maribor will also play Germany's Schalke 04 and the English powerhouse Chelsea in Group E.
