Slovenia elected member of UN Human Rights Council

The UN General Assembly elected Slovenia on Wednesday a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2016-2018 period. The Foreign Ministry said this was a recognition for Slovenia, its diplomacy and for years of efforts contributing to the protection and enforcement of human rights in the world.

Slovenia, which was already a member of the council between 2007 and 2010, has been a supporter of efforts to strengthen its operations ever since it was incepted in 2006 and plans to continue supporting them.

It will strive to credibly and transparently conduct its tasks and cooperate with other countries, UN representatives and civil society organisations, the ministry said.

Slovenia plans to dedicate special attention to its traditional priorities in the field of human rights: the rights of children, gender equality and women's rights, protection of vulnerable population groups, education about human rights, and ties between the environment and human rights.
