The prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages in Slovenia last year were in tune with the EU average, while prices for tobacco products were considerably lower than in most EU member states, the Eurostat statistics office reported last week.
The price level for food and non-alcoholic drinks stood at 96% of the EU average. The country's price level indices for bread, cereal, milk, cheese and eggs stood right at the EU's average.
Meanwhile, the prices of meat were 4% below the EU's average, while the prices of alcoholic beverages were just 1% beneath the average.
Tobacco, on the other hand, proved to be quite cheap in Slovenia, as prices stood at 69% of the EU average.
The Statistics Office made a price level comparison between Slovenia and its neighbouring countries.
The report showed that Hungary's and Croatia's prices for food, beverages and tobacco were lower than Slovenia's, by 20% and 11%, respectively. Price levels in Austria and Italy, however, were higher, by 20% and 17%, respectively.
Alcoholic beverages, on the other hand, proved to be more expensive in Slovenia than in its neighbouring countries.
