Statement on Swedish decision to close the embassy in Ljubljana

The decision was explained to the Slovenian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Žbogar, by the Swedish Foreign Minister, Carl Bildt, who offered assurances that the Swedish government would enhance all forms of direct contact between the countries, such as regular consultations and talks of the two ministers during meetings organised by the EU or other international organisations. Minister Žbogar expressed his wish and expectation that the closing of the Swedish Embassy in Ljubljana would not affect the current excellent relations between the two countries.

During the financial and economic crisis, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken certain measures for the rationalisation and optimisation of the functioning of the diplomatic and consular network, particularly in representing the interests of the Slovenian economy. At the same time, the ministry is examining the possibility of opening several new missions and of closing certain existing embassies or consular posts.
